Tip of the Week: Incognito in Bash

• In Bash, you can add a space before any command to prevent it from being added to the history. I have been using this for many years.
• Just leave a space before any command, like ” htop”, and whala!
  • The simple “htop” command isn’t listed when you use your up or down arrow keys!
  • This is very helpful when you run dangerous commands that you don’t want to accidentally repeat with up-arrow or ctrl+r.
• Also, to enter incognito mode in Bash, type ” set +o history” with a space at the beginning. And ” set -o history” to go back.
  • Or “bash +o history” to start a new instance of Bash with history disabled.
• Or if you have already run some commands and want Bash to not save history when exiting the session, type unset HISTFILE and then exit.
